  The Who

Our Price: $750.00

Product Code: TWCP

Description

This Original Concert poster is from the famous 1973 show at Cow Palace where The Who's drummer, Keith Moon, took a handful of tranquilizers. After a few minutes, his drumming began to slow. Pete Townshend approached the mic and asked "is there a drummer in the house?" A diehard fan, Scott Halpin, joined the band onstage and finished the set. He vowed never to play with another band, knowing that the experience would be impossible to top.

About this item
Here at the rock and roll emporium we have many historical concert posters from many of the greatest bands to have ever lived ...One in particular dates back all the way to 1973... This one is Bill Graham Presents... The Who LIVE at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, CA....so what makes this show different from the rest you ask? It was opening night for the Who's Quadrophenia US Tour...Keith Moon (Hand's Down Rock and Roll's hardest partying Rock Drummer of all time) drank Brandy and swallowed 4 times the usual amount of animal tranquilizers given to him by a fan prior to taking the stage...70 minutes into the show Moon began to falter during their song "Won't Get Fooled Again"...next thing you know he's slumped over his drum set..A lifeless Moon was carried offstage during a 31 minute delay where he received a cortisone shot to help regain consciousness ...Moon was then brought back on stage and was only able to play for a few minutes more into "Magic Bus" ...he passed out once again, slumped over his drum set and was clearly done for the night...The remaining three band members then played "See Me, Feel Me", without drums, with vocalist Roger Daltrey adding a tambourine for percussion. The song received a huge response, and Pete Townshend thanked the crowd for putting up with a three-quarter-strength band. Instead of leaving the stage, though, Townshend asked the crowd, "Can anybody play the drums?" He repeated the question, adding forcefully, "I meant somebody good!" Before they knew it they had found a replacement... Who was it? 19 year old Scot Halpin of Iowa who had just moved to the area and scalped tickets 13 hours before the start of the show...He had been standing left of the stage and his friend, Mike Danese, began noisily telling the security staff, "He can play!" In truth, Halpin had not played in a year, but Danese made enough of a commotion that he had attracted the concert's promoter, Bill Graham. Halpin said of the event,"Graham just looked at me and said, 'Can you do it?' And I said "Yes," straight out. Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey look around and they're as surprised as I am, because Graham put me up there." Halpin was given a shot of Brandy to calm his nerves before taking stage and the rest was rock and roll history...The Who was able to finish the remaining 3 songs of the set and the crowd witnessed a once in a lifetime performance... I don't think Scot Halpin ever did top his one night of glory, sharing the stage with such rock legends... but I'm sure he didn't mind having that story to tell for the rest of his life...
