About this item
When the Beatles released Rubber Soul in December of 1965, The Beach Boys' frontman Brian Wilson was inspired. He is quoted as saying, "[Rubber Soul] was a collection of songs that somehow went together like no album ever made before, and I was very impressed. I said That's it! I really am challenged to do a great album."

Wilson worked with a young Los Angeles lyricist Tony Asher for two months to write the album Pet Sounds, and it was released in May of 1966. Although it wasn't a big seller at the time, Pet Sounds has been extremely influential since the day it was released. Producer George Martin, John Lennon and Paul McCartney cite Pet Sounds as their biggest influence (and an attempt to equal it) for recording Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Roger Waters of Pink Floyd says that "Pet Sounds changed everything about records for me.", and Elton John states that "for me to say that I was enthralled with Pet Sounds is an understatement."

Rolling Stone ranked Pet Sounds as the #2 Greatest Album of All Time in their list of 500, and it is considered to be one of the relics of the first era of psychedelic rock.
